Mangoes in Pakistan

Mangoes, the national fruit of both India and Pakistan is grown in almost all tropical regions of the world with China, Thailand, and Indonesia among the top producers. Pakistan ranks globally among the top 10 producers of mangoes.

Mangoes are not only Pakistan’s national fruit, they are also part of culture, a networking tool, and an instrument of social bonding.

Among the hundreds of varieties of mangoes that are cultivated, only 25 to 30 are actually cultivated on a commercial scale. The famous varieties are Chaunsa, Sindhri, Langra, Dausehri, Anwar Ratol, Saroli, Samar Bahisht, Toota Pari, Fajri, Neelum, Alphanso, Almas, Sanwal, Surkha, Sunera, and Desi.

Punjab, the country's largest province and the bread basket, produces 70% of the country's total mangoes, whereas Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces yield 29% and 1%, respectively.

Mirpur Khas, the capital village of the Mirpur Khas District and Mirpur Khas Division in the Sindh province, is known for its mango cultivation, with hundreds of varieties of the fruit produced each year – it is also called the “City of Mangoes,” and has been home to an annual mango festival since 1955.
