Anthocyanins are a group of polyphenolic pigments that belong to a class of compounds called flavonoids that have antioxidant effects. This means that they fight unstable molecules, called free radicals, that damage cells and increase the risk of certain diseases.
Anthocyanins are found in the plant kingdom. More than 700 anthocyanins were identified in nature, and they are produced by plants to play a role not only in reproduction, by attracting pollinators and seed dispersers, but also in protection against various abiotic and biotic stresses.
